Relentlessly toothache pain seems to build in intensity until it is unbearable. Most likely this pain is the result of an infection or an abscess. If over the counter pain medications are no longer effective an emergency appointment will be necessary. Until we can see you, we will ask you to press a cold compress outside of your mouth where the pain is coming from. This will reduce swelling and alleviate some pain. We might suggest you rinse your mouth with salt water to also reduce inflammation and kill bacteria. If possible, attempt to remove any food lodged near the tooth with a toothpick. You can also try an oral numbing gel until we can see you and address the situation.
A Cracked, Chipped or Broken Tooth
Probably the most common reason for an emergency dental visit across all ages. From eating something too hard to a sporting activity, accidents happen. Depending on the level of discomfort or pain you may be scheduled in the next day and then after an evaluation we can determine the best solution. It could be a root canal and a crown for a broken tooth or maybe a veneer or composite bonding for a cracked or chipped tooth. It may require the broken tooth to be extracted with a dental bridge or a dental implant now the solution. Your level of pain will drive the sense of urgency. Fundamental logistics will help determine the permanent solution.
A dental abscess is when the tip of the root or the immediate area around the root becomes infected. This can become very painful if left unattended. It can also have serious health complications. Call our office and explain your pain. Again, we will qualify with further questions. If the pain is too severe, we may need to indeed administer emergency dental care to determine the correct action. Most often this issue is rectified with a root canal procedure. It may even require the extraction of the infected tooth. An evaluation at the time will determine the correct solution for the situation.
Other Oral Injuries
If you have experienced an accident that has resulted in facial bleeding the best resort will be to get to the emergency room. Once the external bleeding has been stopped a call to our office should be made to address any internal bleeding or injuries inside your mouth. The emergency room doctor, you and our staff will get together on the same page for the best corrective approach and when that procedure is necessary.
