If you believe you have gum disease you are not alone. Almost half of the adults in America over the age of 30 have some form of gum disease. Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is a very progressive, painless infection. An infection self-induced by most. By allowing plaque to form on your teeth you are allowing a build-up of bacteria. When this plaque comes in contact with the soft tissue of the gums it immediately causes an infection. If you were to simply brush regularly as requested the plaque will be removed daily. The gum disease progresses through three stages. Following are those stages, what is noticeable at each stage and the negative ramifications at each stage.

  • Gingivitis- this stage of infection is evident by swollen or puffy gums. You may notice a color change as your gums go from a nice pink to a deeper red color. You will also have bad breath. This stage is easily reversible if caught in time.
  • Periodontitis, early stage-your gums now will begin to bleed when you brush your teeth and they will become sensitive to the touch. The tissue will also start to sag away from the teeth creating pockets. These pockets accelerate the disease by allowing food particles to become trapped creating more infection. A longer recovery period can be expected but you can still avoid long term affects.
  • Periodontitis, advance stage- now you have some loose teeth and may begin to experience bone loss as the jawbone will deteriorate. At this stage you can also lose teeth.

Common Periodontal Procedures to Treat and Reverse Gum Disease and Gum Recession

Here are several procedures that we can offer to abate and reverse your gum disease.

  • Scaling and Root Planing-This procedure is just like having your teeth cleaned only it now goes to the surface of the tooth below the gum line. Scaling will manually remove the damaging plaque. If it has advanced further root planing will scale down the root to again remove the plaque. Both are a common procedure and will address the majority of the cases we see. If an anesthetic is necessary, we may numb the gums to scale or plane below the surface. Upon completion you will be prescribed an antibiotic and you will see positive, healing results in just a few days.
  • Gum Grafting-If you have lost gum tissue and have experienced recession, we may have to take some tissue from a healthy area in your mouth and move it to where it is needed to protect a tooth.
  • Periodontal Plastic Surgery-as the gum disease is removed it may be necessary to reshape your gum line to make it attractive again when you smile. Another simple sculpting practice.
  • Periodontal Laser Treatment-it may be necessary on a rare occasion to remove diseased gum tissue with a laser. The method will avoid gum shrinkage and may be a quicker, more comfortable solution.

Proper Oral Hygiene at Home can Prevent Gum Disease and Gum Recession

Our periodontal therapy can be totally avoided in the future with good habits at home. The dental industry strongly suggests that we all brush our teeth twice a day, for two minutes at each time. Then flossing at least once a day is the basis for a good oral hygiene practice at home. This will remove the bacteria carrying plaque daily not allowing it to form on the teeth. The plaque is the culprit behind the gum disease. If you like our service and want us on your dental health team we will also encourage you to establish appointments every six months for
evaluations, x-rays and to continue our professional teeth cleaning. Prevention is the ticket in the dental business.

We like to see patients with healthy teeth and gums. We might review your diet together to determine what favorites might have to be enjoyed in moderation.
